Spatial Information Day - South Australia

Spatial Information Day 2007 (SID 2007) and the South Australian Spatial Excellence Awards 2007 (SASEA 2007) will be held on Friday 10 August 2007 at the National Wine Centre of Australia. The full day SID 2007 program will be followed by the SASEA 2007 dinner.

Spatial Information Days are educational and promotional events that provide individuals and organisations opportunities to view innovative spatial technologies and projects through presentations and displays.

SID 2007 is presented by South Australias three principal spatial organisations:

The program includes a range of interesting presentations on spatial initiatives and activities. This event enables attendees to broaden their knowledge of significant new applications and developments in the spatial community. Additionally, the day offers a networking opportunity facilitating communication and professional development.

SID 2007 will feature high-level keynote and plenary sessions in the morning, followed by concurrent presentation sessions in the afternoon. This new format will expand the opportunity for professionals to present their work in a conference style environment and will increase the number and range of presentations in the program.

We hope you will join us in celebrating the continued development of the Spatial Information Industry in South Australia.

If you have any ideas or suggestions to be incorporated into this and future SID's, please contact the SID Organising Committee.

Industry Awards

The Industry Awards are presented by the Australian Spatial Information Business Association, SA.

The Industry Award categories are:

Research and Innovation

This award recognises the contribution of an individual or corporation to spatial science research and/or technical innovation. It may be conferred for a specific project, or for an innovative solution to a technical problem.

Land Development and Planning

This Award recognises that a project has achieved an exceptional outcome by:

People and Community

Understanding and assisting our community is an essential part of the spatial information industry. Awards conferred in this category recognise those companies or products that make a difference to the community via grass roots initiatives, educational programs, new services, extension programs and/or tools that permit widespread use or access to spatially derived products or services.

Contributing to the design and development of major engineering initiatives (environmental, civil or mechanical) is a key function of the spatial industry. Awards in this category recognise the contribution the spatial sciences provide to significant infrastructure initiatives.

Industry and Entrepreneurship

Spatial sciences have a significant, though often unrecognised, impact on the operations and effectiveness of major industries. This award recognises such contributions in, for example, agribusiness, mining, fishing and information technology. Entries might comprise new business activities, either based on new technologies or new market niches; or demonstrated success through a growing customer base, increasing revenue and other positive feedback from the market place. This category recognises the techniques, methodologies, business practices and tools that have contributed to the economic performance of an industry, or to the individual company.

Resource and Environment

This award recognises the contribution spatial sciences makes to challenging natural resources issues, for example: managing scarce water resources, water property rights, biota rights, salinity management, or any issue in an environmental context.

Organising Partners

Spatial Information Day 2007 is organised by South Australias three principal spatial organisations:

Spatial Information Committee (SICOM)

The Spatial Information Committee (SICOM) provides a forum in South Australia for information exchange and discussion on all issues associated with spatial information. SICOM plays a significant role in the promotion of the applications and benefits of spatial information to all tiers of Government, industry, education and the wider community. Current membership comprises representatives from Local, State and Commonwealth Government, education, private industry through Australian Spatial Information Business Association (ASIBA) and the Spatial Sciences Institute (SSI). This membership brings together a wide range of organisations involved in the spatial information industry and provides opportunities to influence spatial information development in the State. For more information on SICOM activities, visit the SICOM website.

Spatial Sciences Institute

The Spatial Sciences Institute (SSI) is the national body combining the professional disciplines of surveying, mapping, engineering & mining surveying, remote sensing & photogrammetry and spatial information. The national structure takes advantage of economies of scale and standardised administrative procedures. Service delivery, however, especially CPD, remains at the regional level to ensure the needs of members are best understood and met. The Spatial Sciences Institute caters for the professional people who make up the spatial information industry. It gives a voice to the members of the spatial science community in both the national and international arena.  The SA Region of the SSI presents seminars, social events, newsletters and provides networking opportunities for its members.  A calendar of events in SA can be downloaded from the SSI website.

Australian Spatial Information Business Association

The Australian Spatial Information Business Association (ASIBA) was formed in July 2001 and has quickly established itself as the leading voice for the spatial information industry private sector.  ASIBA is a National Association that recognises the important role of the regions through Regional Management Groups (RMG).  The South Australian RMG was formed in 2002 by local member firms to manage local issues and events.   The SA RMG provides networking opportunities, liaison with Government agencies / politicians and provides an opportunity for spatial businesses to meet and progress industry matters.

Previous SIDs

The inaugural Spatial Information Day was held in 2000.  Since then the event has been held regularly with the support of State Government and more recently, industry participation.  Developments within the spatial information industry and their applications to government and private sector projects are demonstrated each year to over 250 delegates.

The success of Spatial Information Days has seen each event grow in attendance.  Keynote speakers from across Australia present to the ever-expanding audience.  For an insight into what SID has to offer, browse through the presentations of SID 2006.
